The journaling says...
Each summer the neighborhood squirrels turn my backyard into an amusement park. They invite all their friends. I have counted as many as 15 squirrels at one time. By midmorning the yard is full of squirrels chasing each other up and down the trees.
But like any amusement park, there must be food. The squirrels make free use of my bird feeders. I finally put up a sunflower seed feeder just for squirrels, as well as putting seed on the ground. This gives the birds at least a chance at the supposedly squirrel-proof feeders.
The activity continues at a frenzy. With the birds and the squirrels, it gets quite noisy. Around 3:00 in the afternoon, the crowd starts to go home. But the next day they are all back for more fun and games...and free food.
When the first hint of fall arrives, the daily playtime stops. I only see the few squirrels who live in the immediate area. Even they are too busy to hang out at the feeders. A quick bite, and they are off to store up supplies for the winter.
